Lesson 40 · Particles & Expressiveness
Systematic patterns: verb reduplication (試試), classifier reduplication (個個), AAB pattern (飲飲茶).
For Mandarin Speakers
Mandarin also uses reduplication (試試, 看看, 個個), but Cantonese has the distinctive AAB pattern (飲飲茶, 傾傾偈) which doesn't exist in Mandarin. Cantonese verb reduplication also tends to be more casual/diminutive.
Reduplication — repeating a word or part of it — is a productive pattern in Cantonese that adds softening, casualness, or universality. Several types exist.
Verb reduplication (VV) = tentative / casual action: 試試 si3 si3 (give it a try), 睇睇 tai2 tai2 (take a look), 等等 dang2 dang2 (wait a sec). This softens the verb, making it feel more casual or tentative. Same concept as Mandarin 試試, 看看.
Classifier reduplication = 'every': 個個 go3 go3 (everyone — lit. 'each each'), 日日 jat6 jat6 (every day), 次次 ci3 ci3 (every time), 年年 nin4 nin4 (every year). 個個都鍾意 go3 go3 dou1 zung1 ji3 (everyone likes it). 日日返工 jat6 jat6 faan1 gung1 (go to work every day). Same as Mandarin 個個, 天天.
AAB pattern = casual / leisurely action: This is distinctly Cantonese and does NOT exist in Mandarin. The verb is reduplicated before its object: 飲飲茶 jam2 jam2 caa4 (have some tea leisurely), 傾傾偈 king1 king1 gai2 (have a casual chat), 行行街 haang4 haang4 gaai1 (stroll around the shops). The AAB pattern implies doing something in a relaxed, unhurried way.
Adjective reduplication for endearment / softening: 靚靚 leng3 leng3 (pretty — affectionate), 細細 sai3 sai3 (small — diminutive/cute). 靚靚女 leng3 leng3 neoi2 (pretty girl — friendly/casual address). 細細個 sai3 sai3 go3 (when one was small / as a little kid). This adds warmth or diminutive feeling.
Comparison with Mandarin: Both languages use VV and classifier reduplication similarly. The key Cantonese-only pattern is AAB (飲飲茶, 傾傾偈) — Mandarin would NOT say *喝喝茶 or *聊聊天 in this doubled-verb-before-object structure. Mandarin uses V一V instead: 喝一喝茶.
Mandarin: 你試試這個
VV reduplication = tentative action — same as Mandarin
個個 = everyone — classifier reduplication = 'every'
AAB pattern: 飲飲茶 = have tea casually — distinctly Cantonese
AAB pattern: 行行街 = casual shopping stroll — no Mandarin equivalent
細細個 = when one was small — adjective reduplication for diminutive
