Lesson 39 · Particles & Expressiveness
Three more essential sentence-final particles — 'only/just', 'in addition', and soft completion.
For Mandarin Speakers
These particles have no Mandarin equivalents. Mandarin uses separate words or phrases to express these meanings: 而已 (only), 還 (in addition), 了 (completion). Cantonese packs these nuances into sentence-final particles.
Cantonese sentence-final particles carry nuances that Mandarin expresses through separate words. Here are three more essential particles to add to your repertoire.
咋 zaa3 = only / just / that's all: 得一個咋 dak1 jat1 go3 zaa3 (there's only one). 我知咋 ngo5 zi1 zaa3 (only I know / I just know). 玩吓咋 waan2 haa5 zaa3 (just playing around / it's nothing serious). 咋 limits or minimizes — it says 'that's all there is to it'. Mandarin equivalent: 而已 éryǐ or 罷了 bàle.
添 tim1 = in addition / even / on top of that: 仲有添!zung6 jau5 tim1! (there's even more!). 好食添 hou2 sik6 tim1 (it's even tasty — on top of everything else). 添 adds a sense of 'more than expected' or 'additionally'. It often pairs with 仲 zung6 for extra emphasis: 仲貴添 zung6 gwai3 tim1 (it's even more expensive!).
㖞 / 嘞 le4 = softer completion / mild assertion: This is a gentler version of 喇 laa3. 好㖞 hou2 le4 (OK then / that'll do). 走㖞 zau2 le4 (let's go then). It signals mild completion or acceptance without the stronger finality of 喇. Think of it as a softer 'alright then'.
Particle stacking: Cantonese particles can be combined for nuanced effects. 㗎咋 gaa3 zaa3 = 'it's only...' (assertion + limitation): 講吓㗎咋 gong2 haa5 gaa3 zaa3 (I was just saying / it was just talk). 囉喎 lo1 wo3 = 'obviously, you know' (obviousness + reminder): 係囉喎 hai6 lo1 wo3 (that's right, isn't it!). Stacking takes practice — start by learning individual particles, then notice combinations in natural speech.
咋 = only/just — minimizes: 'that's all'
咋 = just / it's nothing — minimizes the significance
添 = in addition / there's more — adds 'on top of that' nuance
㖞 = soft completion — 'OK then / that'll do'
㗎咋 = stacked particles: assertion (㗎) + limitation (咋) = 'it was only...'
