Cantonese Level Up is a free project for learning Cantonese. This page says what it keeps about you, where that goes, and how to have it deleted.
What we keep
- Your account: your email address, your name if you give one, and your password, stored only as a one-way hash. If you sign in with Google, we receive your email address and name from Google, and nothing else.
- Your learning: which words you know, your reviews, your streak, your answers to the setup questions, your role-play conversations and your answers in practice sentences, all as text.
- Videos and subtitle files you upload, until you delete them.
- A few security records: counts of failed sign-in attempts (by email and by IP address), and one-time links for resetting a password or confirming an email address.
Your voice
When you speak an answer (in role-play, practice sentences or flashcards), the recording is sent to a speech-recognition service to turn it into text, and then discarded. We keep the text and whether your answer passed, never the recording.
In role-play, the voice of your conversation partner is generated by AI and kept so that replaying a line is instant. That is the partner's voice, not yours.
Services that handle your data
The app runs on these services, and each receives only what it needs to do its part:
- Vercel hosts the app, and its Web Analytics counts page views and visitors without cookies (it records which page, the referring site, country, browser and device type, not who you are); Neon hosts the database; Cloudflare R2 stores uploaded videos and the partner's audio.
- Google Cloud turns speech into text, and runs Gemini (transcribing answers and videos, and generating speech) and translation.
- OpenAI writes your role-play partner's replies, from the text of the conversation.
- Modal transcribes the audio of videos you upload.
- Resend sends password-reset and confirmation emails to your address.
- Google sign-in, only if you choose it.
These providers process the data under their own terms and privacy policies.
Cookies and browser storage
We use a cookie to keep you signed in, one to know your time zone (so your streak counts the right day), and three for display settings. Your browser also stores your theme and a few display preferences. None of these are used for advertising or tracking. Page-view counts come from Vercel Web Analytics, which sets no cookie and doesn't follow you across sites.
Deleting your account
Email support@cantolevelup.com from the address on your account and ask for it to be deleted. Your account, your learning history, your conversations and your uploaded videos are then deleted. We will confirm by email when it is done.
Children
The app is not meant for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has made an account, email us and we will delete it.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date. Questions go to support@cantolevelup.com.
