Lesson 30 · Bonus
Common expressions: 搞掂, 冇所謂, 得閒 — things you won't find in textbooks.
For Mandarin Speakers
These are everyday Cantonese expressions that have no direct Mandarin translation. They're essential for understanding native speakers and sounding natural, but you won't find them in standard Chinese dictionaries.
This lesson covers essential Cantonese colloquialisms — everyday expressions that native speakers use constantly but that aren't typically covered in formal grammar. These are what make you sound natural rather than textbook-learned.
搞掂 gaau2 dim6 — 'done / sorted / taken care of'. One of the most useful Cantonese expressions. 搞掂未?gaau2 dim6 mei6? (Is it done yet?). 搞掂喇!gaau2 dim6 laa3! (All done!). It implies that something has been successfully handled or completed. Mandarin equivalent would be roughly 搞定了 gǎodìng le.
冇所謂 mou5 so2 wai6 — 'it doesn't matter / I don't mind / whatever'. Used when you're indifferent or flexible: 你想去邊都得,我冇所謂 nei5 soeng2 heoi3 bin1 dou1 dak1, ngo5 mou5 so2 wai6 (Wherever you want to go is fine, I don't mind). Mandarin 無所謂 wúsuǒwèi exists but Cantonese uses it more frequently and casually.
得閒 dak1 haan4 — 'free / have free time'. 你得閒嗎?nei5 dak1 haan4 maa3? → better as 你得唔得閒?(Are you free?). 得閒嚟飲茶 dak1 haan4 lai4 jam2 caa4 (Come for dim sum when you're free) — a classic Cantonese invitation. 抵 dai2 — 'worth it / good value': 好抵!hou2 dai2! (Great deal!). 正 zeng3 — 'awesome / excellent': 好正!hou2 zeng3! (So good!). 勁 ging6 — 'amazing / powerful / intense': 好勁!hou2 ging6! (Incredible!).
收工 sau1 gung1 — 'finish work / knock off'. 幾點收工?gei2 dim2 sau1 gung1? (What time do you finish work?). 放工 fong3 gung1 — same meaning, also very common. 飲茶 jam2 caa4 — literally 'drink tea' but means 'go for dim sum'. 食夜 sik6 je5 is not a word — you want 食宵夜 sik6 siu1 je2 (have supper/late-night snack). 吹水 ceoi1 seoi2 — 'to chat / shoot the breeze' (literally 'blow water'): 我哋坐低吹吓水 ngo5 dei6 co5 dai1 ceoi1 haa5 seoi2 (let's sit down and chat).
搞掂 = done/sorted — the go-to expression for task completion
冇所謂 = doesn't matter / I'm flexible — very common casual expression
得閒 = free time; 飲茶 = dim sum (literally 'drink tea') — classic invitation
正 zeng3 = awesome/excellent — casual positive slang
收工 = finish work; 吹水 = chat (literally 'blow water')
