Lesson 5 · Core Grammar
Cantonese 嘅 vs Mandarin 的 — usage patterns and when it's dropped.
For Mandarin Speakers
Cantonese 嘅 ge3 is a direct replacement for Mandarin 的 de in almost all contexts — possessive, attributive, and nominalizing. The rules for when to drop it are similar to Mandarin too.
The particle 嘅 ge3 is the Cantonese equivalent of Mandarin 的 de. Whenever you would use 的 in Mandarin, use 嘅 in Cantonese. It marks possession, attributes, and nominalization.
For possession: 我嘅書 ngo5 ge3 syu1 (my book) = Mandarin 我的書. 佢嘅車 keoi5 ge3 ce1 (his/her car) = Mandarin 他的車. The structure is identical — just swap 的 for 嘅.
Just like Mandarin drops 的 with close relationships, Cantonese drops 嘅 in the same situations. You say 我媽媽 ngo5 maa4 maa4 (my mom), NOT 我嘅媽媽. Similarly: 我屋企 ngo5 uk1 kei2 (my home), 你朋友 nei5 pang4 jau5 (your friend). The rule is the same as Mandarin: close/intimate relationships don't need the possessive marker.
For attributive use (describing a noun): 好大嘅屋 hou2 daai6 ge3 uk1 (a very big house) = Mandarin 很大的房子. 紅色嘅衫 hung4 sik1 ge3 saam1 (red clothes) = Mandarin 紅色的衣服.
嘅嘢 ge3 je5 is a common Cantonese nominalizer meaning 'the thing(s) of' or 'stuff'. 食嘅嘢 sik6 ge3 je5 means 'things to eat / food'. 你嘅嘢 nei5 ge3 je5 means 'your stuff'. 嘢 je5 (thing/stuff) is itself a Cantonese-specific word with no direct Mandarin written equivalent — Mandarin uses 東西 dōngxi.
Mandarin: 這個是我的 zhège shì wǒ de
嘅 ge3 = Mandarin 的, used as possessive pronoun
Mandarin: 他的電話號碼 tā de diànhuà hàomǎ
Standard possessive: pronoun + 嘅 + noun
Mandarin: 我媽媽 wǒ māma
嘅 dropped with close family — same rule as Mandarin 的
嘅嘢 ge3 je5 = 'stuff/things that are...' — Cantonese nominalizer
Mandarin: 紅色的衣服 hóngsè de yīfu
Attributive use: adjective + 嘅 + noun
