Adverbs of Manner

The word 咁 gam3 (so, such, like that) is one of the most common adverbs in spoken Cantonese. It replaces several Mandarin words: 那麼 nàme (so/that), 這麼 zhème (so/this), and can also mean 這樣/那樣 (like this/that). Think of it as a single word covering all of these.

The basic pattern is 咁 + adjective, meaning 'so...' or 'that...': 咁快 gam3 faai3 (so fast), 咁遠 gam3 jyun5 (so far), 咁多 gam3 do1 (so many). In Mandarin, these would be 那麼快, 那麼遠, 那麼多.

For manner complements ('did something so well/badly'), Cantonese uses Verb + 得 + 咁 + adjective: 做得咁好 zou6 dak1 gam3 hou2 (did it so well), 跑得咁快 paau2 dak1 gam3 faai3 (ran so fast). This parallels Mandarin's Verb + 得 + 那麼 + adjective (做得那麼好).

咁樣 gam2 joeng2 means 'like this/that' or 'in this/that way', replacing Mandarin 這樣/那樣. Note the tone difference: 咁 in 咁樣 is gam2 (tone 2), not gam3! This tonal distinction matters: gam3 = 'so' (degree), gam2 = 'like this' (manner). Example: 唔好咁樣做 m4 hou2 gam2 joeng2 zou6 (don't do it like that).

Cantonese also uses 點 dim2 (how) in manner questions: 點做 dim2 zou6? (how to do it?), 點去 dim2 heoi3? (how to get there?). This replaces Mandarin 怎麼 zěnme. You'll often hear 點樣 dim2 joeng2 as a fuller form meaning 'in what way'.
